Explosion Proof Lighting For Flare Stacks
Guidelines for night marking flare stacks with obstruction lights
Flare stacks are gas combustion devices used in industrial plants such as petroleum refineries, chemical plants, natural gas processing plants as well as at oil or gas production sites having oil wells, gas wells, offshore oil and gas rigs and landfills.
There is no single standard defining minimum mandatory requirements governing design and installation of obstruction lighting; on the other hand the most common and widespread regulations are ICAO's and FAA's.
Most important points to night marking flare stacks
Number and types of lighting levels (structure height)
H < 45m
1 level of low intensity obstruction lights shall be used
45m < H < 105m
2 levels of obstruction lights shall be used: top level with medium intesity, intermediate with low intensity
105m < H < 210m
4 levels shall be used: top with medium intesity, 1st intermediate with low intensity, 2nd intermediate with medium intensity, lower level with low intensity
Number of lights per level (structure diameter/width)
D < 6m
3 obstruction lights shall be used (120°) for flare stacks with circular base < 6m
D > 6m
4 obstruction lights shall be used (90°) for flare stacks with circular base > 6m
W < 45m
4 obstruction lights shall be used (one per corner) for flare stacks with square base

Most important points to night marking flare stacks
- lights shall be put between 1,5-3 m below the top of the chimney in order to avoid a potential disruption by the smoke;
- the number of lights to be installed at the top and at each level depends on the diameter/width of the structure;
- the number of light levels depends on the height of the structure;
- lights shall be certified in accordance with ATEX/IECEx beacuse they are installed in hazardous and harsh environments.
